My journey continued

Unfortunately I’m not yet able to talk to some of the women involved, as I’m still blogging from London Heathrow. Due to high winds in the UK and resulting chaos on railways and roads, I missed my flight yesterday.

A barrister on the train called the weather ‘an act of god’ but some of us saw the chaos as the inaction of man. It was a salutary reminder that in the ‘developed’ world we rely too much on automatic systems and fragmentation of services or skills – which means that the capacity to react in emergencies, show initiative and make decisions has been lost.

Stranded with other passengers in the camaraderie of the distressed, on cold trains going backwards and in rural hotels with no mobile network, I had plenty of opportunity to discuss the World Social Forum, the concept of ‘people before profit’ and why another world is necessary.
