Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, President of Liberia, one of the few women heads of state in the world – and the first one in Africa – celebrates her first year in office this week.
The president, who has called Liberia’s 70 percent illiteracy rate a stumbling block to development, has vowed to provide universal education and has emphasized the importance of educating girls in particular

Definitely good news, but my celebrations were tempered by reports out this week of rising levels of rape and sexual exploitation of women and girls in post-war Liberia. The most shocking aspect to me is the age of the victims – many as young as 5 years old. I would hope Johnson-Sirleaf’s focus on education could go some way to tackling this issue.
